Ravel | Unravel is a solo exhibition of recent artworks by artist Rocío Rodríguez (b. 1989). Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, based in Santa Fe, NM. Rodríguez’s practice blurs the line between painting and sculpture. Removing the stretcher and celebrating the architecture of the fabric, Rocío creates sculptures with the canvas. Rocío embraces the ephemeral; her works can’t be installed the same way. Rodriguez is an immigrant; she adapts to her context, and her work behaves similarly.
This exhibit includes Rodríguez’s “single hair” series. With an introverted language, these small pieces are contained and isolated, a spiral keeping chaos under control. They celebrate the thinnest side of the canvas, one that is often unseen and underappreciated. Other works in this exhibit include Rodríguez’s 9ft tall creature, composed of a 12 ft x 26 ft canvas and an armature. Moving away from the wall, the canvas becomes bolder and louder. Her creature captures the absent figure. Balance is essential, dark and light, small and monumental, contained and wild. The canvas is free in Rocio’s work and has much to say.
Join us for the opening reception of this incredible exhibition on Saturday, June 7th from 4pm-7pm!
